The luxury trip starts long before the plane takes off
In our first blog, we explored why Chinese luxury travel is rewriting the rules of prestige. Now, let’s move one step earlier – the moment these travelers are still at home, scrolling, searching, and dreaming.
For China’s high-spending travelers, this phase isn’t a casual browse. It’s a curated ritual – a blend of inspiration hunting, peer-approved validation, and meticulous planning that often aligns with seasonal peaks like Chinese New Year, Golden Week, and summer holidays. For brands, timing campaigns to these windows is just as important as the creative itself.
Behavioral insights: dream + plan + book
The pre-trip stage is where desire is shaped.
- Dream: Travelers build mood boards on Xiaohongshu, save short videos on Douyin, and follow KOLs who have cracked their preferred destination.
- Plan: They deep-dive into hotel reviews, attraction guides, and even weather patterns to shape itineraries.
- Book: Decisions often come after a mix of social proof, price alerts, and exclusive luxury offers – not after the first ad they see.
This is why being in the room during this stage matters – because the conversation is already happening without you.
Key platforms in the pre-trip stage
Xiaohongshu (RED): The ultimate inspiration hub. Travelers search for “luxury Jeju itinerary” or “hidden Tokyo experiences,” consuming long-form UGC, influencer reviews, and packing lists.
Douyin: 15-second bursts of visual wanderlust – stunning sunset drone shots, luxury hotel walkthroughs, street food close-ups.
OTA travel guides: Ctrip, Fliggy, and Qunar offer curated luxury sections that combine editorial content with instant booking.
Baidu: Paid ads targeting high-intent keywords like “best luxury resorts in Phuket” or “private tours in Provence.”
Advanced targeting tactics
- Precise audience segmentation
- Layer demographics (age 25-44, top-tier cities, high disposable income) with travel frequency and past luxury purchases.
- Behavioral targeting
- Trigger ads based on actions – saving a Xiaohongshu post, clicking on a Douyin travel clip, or adding a destination to an OTA wishlist.
- Zero-party data
- Use quizzes, polls, and gated guides (“Download our Luxury Tokyo Guide”) to collect declared preferences and feed them into your campaign targeting.
- Cross-device consistency
- The report shows luxury travelers switch constantly between devices. Brands that deliver synchronized ads across mobile, OTT, and OTV stay front of mind.
Practical brand plays
- Partner with niche KOLs who own authority in a specific destination or travel theme (e.g., ski resorts, wine trails, wellness retreats).
- Seed branded content at the itinerary research stage – sponsored lists, “hidden gem” articles, or exclusive hotel walkthrough videos.
- Offer exclusive pre-booking perks (room upgrades, private transfers) only accessible during the planning stage.
A Real-world example

A luxury Macau resort cracked the code on pre-trip targeting by teaming up with a major Chinese payment solution provider. Instead of blanketing ads to “everyone,” they built a travel prediction model that spotted would-be summer visitors before they even started browsing.
Using past booking behavior, spending patterns, and lookalike audiences, they zeroed in on high-net-worth travelers who booked competitor hotels, bought train or bridge tickets to Macau, or splurged over RMB 5,000 a month. Then, they surrounded these prospects with multi-screen storytelling, mobile display, online TV, and OTT, so the brand appeared in every stage of their trip planning.
The result? 103% more impressions than forecast, a 2.87% CTR (nearly triple the target), and an ROI of 5.67 – all before the peak summer rush even began. That’s what precision looks like when luxury meets data.
