Millennials are on the move and willing to spend on leisure trips as compared to people belonging to the older age group, reveals a survey. The survey was conducted by Phocuswright study, which is co-commissioned by Ixigo, a travel marketplace. Over 2,700 travellers took the online survey out of which half of the respondents were millennials. It suggested that as many as 22% seniors, aged over 55, spent over Rs 6,000 (USD 84.69) per night for their most significant trips during the year while 34% of the millennials, specifically in the age group of 25-30 years spent this much or more.

Increased pay scales and high paying professions have opened up new spending avenues for the Indian millennial. Social media has contributed towards influencing this millennial in myriad ways through influencers, lifestyle bloggers and vloggers encouraging young Indians to explore the world and document their experiences.

“Millennials are changing the way Indians travel. Travel apps, coupled with rising smartphone penetration, has brought about a marked evolution in the traveller’s behaviour. In 2017, Indian travellers on an average spent Rs 1.5 lakh on their travel and took three leisure trips across the year,” Aloke Bajpai, ixigo CEO and Co-founder, said in a statement.

Mobile travel sales in India are expected to rise at 67.1% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2017 to 2020, according to research from marketing technology firm Criteo. Indian digital travellers are mostly influenced by travel website reviews, posts and forums, especially in the case of millennials. However, they are also influenced by experiences from their last trip (50%), as well as internet advertisements of the destination and travel services (56%), respectively.

A person took 6.7 trips in the past 12 months with an average spending on a leisure trip of Rs 55,176 (USD 778.72) while debit and credit cards are the most popular modes of payment. CAGR of consumer expenditure on leisure would be 9.9% from 2017 to 2020, added the report.
